Impersonator Steals Data From South Africa’s Discovery Insure

The car and home insurance unit of Discovery Ltd. said it suffered a data breach that resulted in the loss of some client information.

Discovery Insure, a unit of South Africa’s second-largest insurer by market value, said it uncovered the scam during an audit and forensic screening. A person impersonating a client called the unit’s call center requesting policy details.

“The impersonator most likely obtained personal information from historical third-party data breaches, outside of Discovery,” the insurer said in a response to queries from Bloomberg.
