Hartford Unit Sues to Avoid Paying in AI Company BIPA Suits

A Hartford Financial Services Group Inc. insurance unit sued to avoid paying a technology company’s legal defense costs in two proposed class actions alleging violations of Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act.

The suit is one of many in a wave of coverage disputes over litigation under the landmark Illinois law. Federal and Illinois courts have sent mixed signals on whether insurers can rely on certain policy exclusions to deny coverage for claims under the state law.
