Americans who count on insurance companies to write the policies that protect their homes against natural disasters are facing a grim reality: The coverage is becoming prohibitively expensive. Insurers are suffering, too.

There are a handful of culprits. High inflation brought on by pandemic-era supply chain problems and economic policy has combined with greater frequency and severity of catastrophes due to global warming. The result has been fewer choices and higher premiums for consumers, and surging claims costs for insurers.
