CVS Loses to Chubb, AIG Insurance Units in Opioid Coverage Row

A Delaware state court handed another win to insurers—including units of Chubb Ltd., American International Group Inc., and Travelers Cos.—pushing back on their coverage obligations in litigation against CVS Health Corp. for its role in the opioid epidemic.

The insurance policies afforded coverage only for claims that seek damages because of bodily injury or property damage, and the underlying litigation failed to allege such damages, the Delaware Superior Court said in a Tuesday order, ruling the insurers don’t have to pay CVS’ legal defense costs or any potential judgment or settlement.
