AIG Unit Must Pay $92 Million Legal Bill in Pollution Litigation

An American International Group Inc. unit is on the hook for nearly $92 million in legal defense costs in hundreds of underlying lawsuits alleging pollution and bodily injuries at food sterilization facilities in a Chicago suburb, an Illinois federal court said.

Sterigenics US LLC requested over $75 million in legal defense costs from its insurer, National Union Fire Insurance Co. of Pittsburgh, Pa., while Griffith Foods International Inc. sought roughly $16 million. Both requests are reasonable, the US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois said Tuesday, rejecting the insurer’s motion to dismiss the suit.
