Utah Plans Social Media Age-Checks, Parental Consent for Youth

Social media companies subject to Utah’s first-in-the-nation law requiring parental consent for young users would be able to verify ages by using facial characteristics or government IDs, under a proposed rule.

The proposal published Oct. 15 provides early details into how Utah would implement its Social Media Regulation Act, which includes two laws enacted this year. The laws add parental consent requirements and other social media data and design mandates for users under 18.
