Orrick Leads Pack in NCAA Legal Bills That Hit $35.6 Million (1)

The National Collegiate Athletic Association saw five law firms receive almost $35.6 million in legal fees during its most recent fiscal year, according to a new tax filing.

Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, a longtime legal adviser to the nonprofit governing body for US college sports, earned the most at more than $16.7 million during the one-year period between Sept. 1, 2022, and Aug. 31, 2023, the filing shows.

Court records show that Orrick’s represented the NCAA in concussion and wrongful death litigation. The NCAA was found not liable last year for the death of former quarterback Cullen Finnerty. Orrick ...
