NY Targets Addictive Social Media Feeds, Child Data Storage (1)

New York lawmakers have revamped their legislation that would restrict how social media companies collect children’s data.

State Sen. Andrew Gounardes (D) and Assemblywoman Nily Rozic (D) previously proposed to effectively ban anyone under age 18 from using social media without their parents’ permission. They also had proposed a ban on collecting, retaining, processing, or selling children’s personal data. Utah lawmakers attracted attention earlier this year for approving a child data law with such a provision.

Both state Attorney General Letitia James (D) and Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) endorsed the overhauled bill at a New York City event Wednesday.
