NY Governor Proposes Extension of State Autonomous Vehicle Pilot

Autonomous vehicle operators will have two more years to test their technology on New York roads under a plan included in the $233 billion proposed budget Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) released on Tuesday.

The move could pave the way for autonomous vehicles to eventually serve customers in the New York City market. Authorization for operators of these vehicles to test the technology on state roads will expire on April 1 unless an extension is approved by state lawmakers.

Hochul would extend that deadline until April 1, 2026, according to a budget bill introduced Tuesday afternoon.
