A set of New York legislative bills focused on limiting the collection of personal data ranging from location information to genetic data were announced Monday in a new push for individual privacy rights by a coalition of state lawmakers and civil rights groups.
The 10-bill package—dubbed “Banning Big Brother"—pushes bans on warrant-based access to mobile phone location data and fake social media profiles created by police.
The proposed legislation is the latest effort driven by state legislators and privacy advocates, including the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (STOP), to make New York “a surveillance sanctuary state,” according to the roll-out statement. ...
