Hochul Pushes Tags on AI Content, No Political Deepfakes in NY

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) is pushing for stricter labeling requirements on AI-generated content with a focus on political deepfakes as consequential elections loom.

Hochul cited the need for AI transparency as the main impetus driving two measures she included in her $260 billion budget released Jan. 20. Providers of content generated by AI would have to tag that content with identification data, and major platforms such as Meta Platforms Inc. and X Corp. would have to maintain that digital watermark.
