A former mine manager in Illinois faces up to five years in prison for defrauding the US Mine Safety and Health Administration after concealing the existence of an underground mine fire.

Timothy Parsons, a former mine manager at MC #1 in Franklin County, kept miners working despite an underground fire that was ignited by a cutting torch used to cut collapsed steel beams, according to the US Department of Justice.

Parsons and his co-conspirators, who were not named by the DOJ, didn’t follow the approved Mine Emergency Evacuation and Firefighting Plan when they failed to notify MSHA or evacuate miners ...
