Carlyle Taps Former CIA Lawyer to Oversee Legal and Compliance

The global investment firm Carlyle announced Monday that Kate Heinzelman will join the firm as general counsel effective June 29.

Heinzelman has experience in both the public and private sectors, having served as general counsel of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2022 to 2025 and holding senior roles at the Justice Department, Sidley Austin LLP, and the White House Counsel’s Office. She will report directly to Carlyle’s CEO Harvey Schwartz and oversee the firm’s global legal and compliance organization.
