A California lawmaker is trying again to extend the state’s false advertising law to junk carbon offsets amid heightened scrutiny of dubious projects sold to help buyers reduce their emissions.
State Sen. Monique Límon (D) has reintroduced legislation that would make it unlawful for a person to sell carbon offsets if they know or should know the claims made about those offsets are unlikely to be quantifiable or real.
The bill (S.B. 1036) is identical to legislation Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) vetoed last year, although no lawmakers voted against it and no organization formally opposed the measure.
