California Eyes Higher Fines for Corporate Crime to Cover Cuts

Corporations would pay higher penalties for felonies and misdemeanors in California under legislation that would shore up funding for crime victim services.

The Assembly Public Safety Committee voted Tuesday to advance the measure (AB 2432) that would also require courts to issue an additional fine of at least $100,000 to companies convicted of a felony. It still faces votes of the full Assembly and Senate. The bill faces no official opposition.

A company convicted of a crime would face an added penalty worth twice the amount of the loss at issue, or up to $25 million. A court ...
