The United States has recently turned a dark and disturbing corner on immigration. In his zeal to boost deportation numbers, President Donald Trump is pursuing ever more specious cases, arresting those with valid green cards and visas and proceeding with deportations despite judges’ orders.

“Due process” may sound humdrum. But it underpins the freedoms of ordinary people in this country. The Fifth Amendment generally guarantees that no one in the US — citizen or not — should be “deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.”
