An immigration measure Texas state lawmakers passed in 2023, now set to go into effect this month, was challenged again Monday in federal court.
The lawsuit brought against the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety’s director says federal law overrides the immigration measure put forth by legislators and the governor in the Republican-controlled state.
The measure, passed in 2023 amid a surge of unlawful border crossings that Republicans blamed on President Joe Biden’s administration, creates state-level crimes for illegal entry and re-entry and authorizes state judges to initiate deportations to Mexico, regardless of from where the immigrant hailed. ...
