Terrorist Watch List Hit at Border Draws DHS Watchdog’s Rebuke

US border officials botched the screening of a migrant on the government’s terrorist watch list, allowing the person to stay in the country for two weeks before being arrested, a federal watchdog says.

The Department of Homeland Security’s inspector general blamed the April 2022 release on US Customs and Border Protection’s “ineffective practices and processes for resolving inconclusive matches” with the Terrorist Screening Data Set.

“The component risks releasing individuals into the United States who potentially threaten national security and public safety” if those practices continue, the inspector general said in a report publicly released Wednesday.
