Detainees, Private Prison Company Settle Forced Labor Case (1)

A group of immigrant detainees is settling a lawsuit with private prison operator CoreCivic Inc. in which they alleged they were coerced to participate in a “voluntary work program.”

Current and former detainees claimed in the suit that they were threatened with punishments including solitary confinement and even prosecution if they didn’t agree to scrub dishes, do laundry, or perform other work at the Lumpkin, Ga., facility run under a contract with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The company has insisted the work program was voluntary.
