Migrants who may pose a threat to the US would be deported more rapidly under a Department of Homeland Security proposal that aims to address fears of security risks related to border crossings in recent years.
US officials would make an earlier determination, within days of a person’s arrival to the US, of whether a person is ineligible to seek asylum based on national security or public safety. That decision, known as an asylum bar, is made later in the current process. DHS announced the plan Thursday in a proposed regulation that’s open to public comment until June 12.
