Minnesota Expects $20 Million Windfall From Fee on Opioid Makers

A Minnesota law that takes effect July 1 imposes annual fees of $55,000 on opioid manufacturers as a means of funding efforts to combat the addiction crisis.

State Rep. Dave Baker (R), a co-sponsor of the law, said he expects other states to follow suit with similar legislation. Many state lawmakers were excited about Minnesota’s approach during a meeting of the National Conference of State Legislators in May, he said.

“Some states thought this was pretty cutting edge,” Baker said.
