Whistleblower Lawsuit Asks Court To Order WellCare to Pay Up to $1.8 Billion

TAMPA, Fla.—An attorney for a former financial officer at WellCare Health Plans Inc. has asked a federal court in Florida to order the Tampa-based insurer to pay as much as $1.8 billion for defrauding Medicaid in Florida and six other states by allegedly inflating expenditure information (United States ex rel. Hellein).

In a 266-page qui tam complaint ordered unsealed in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, attorneys for the former WellCare official, Sean Hellein, said the amount, which includes triple damages, would be based on an estimated $400 million to $600 million in fraudulent claims ...
