Walgreens to Pay $50 Million to Settle U.S. Kickback Charges

Walgreen Co. agreed to pay $50 million to settle U.S. claims that the pharmacy chain defrauded the government by enrolling hundreds of thousands of Medicare, Medicaid and military health-care recipients into its Prescription Savings Club (United States v. Walgreen, No. 12-cv-00300, unsealed 1/19/17).

The pharmacy chain, through the plan, offers discounts on drugs and a 10 percent rebate on Walgreens-brand products, including grocery items. Federal and state laws prohibit people enrolled in a publicly funded health care program from signing up for such plans, Walgreens says on its website. ...
