Virginia Public Hospital Fails to Escape Health Fraud Charges

A public hospital in Hampton Roads, Va. must defend itself from criminal charges that it aided and abetted a doctor in defrauding health insurers and the federal government after a judge refused to dismiss the case against it.

An indictment charging Chesapeake Regional Medical Center with health-care fraud and conspiracy to defraud the US was sufficient, Judge Elizabeth W. Hanes, of the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia said Tuesday.

Chesapeake is accused of helping and enabling a medical staff gynecologist commit fraud by performing and billing for unnecessary medical care and side-stepping Medicaid regulations.
