The Department of Veterans Affairs announced a new clinical trial on Tuesday that will measure the safety and efficacy of psychedelic-assisted therapy to treat severe mental health disorders.
The trial will evaluate how methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) assisted therapy compares to a placebo in treating post-traumatic stress disorder and alcohol use disorder in veterans.
The department’s announcement cites President Donald Trump’s April executive order that calls on the VA, the Food and Drug Administration, and the Department of Health and Human Services to expedite research and review of psychedelic drugs to treat serious mental illness.
