Associations representing the European and the U.S. pharmaceutical industries July 24 jointly endorsed principles for responsible clinical trial data-sharing, adding to an issue that has been wracked with controversy.

“Principles for Responsible Clinical Trial Data Sharing: Our Commitment to Patients and Researchers” reflect strong support for sharing clinical trial data to benefit patients and foster scientific discovery in a way that maintains patient privacy, the integrity of regulatory systems, and incentives to invest in biomedical research, according to the announcement.

“We believe it is important to engage with all stakeholders in the clinical trial ecosystem, including the patients who volunteer to participate in clinical trials, about the issue.”
—Matt Bennett, PhRMA senior vice president
