US Detects Bird Flu in Swine for First Time in Oregon Backyard

Highly pathogenic avian influenza was discovered for the first time in swine in the US, the US Department of Agriculture said in a Wednesday statement.

  • H5N1 virus also detected in poultry at backyard operation in Crook County
  • One of five pigs on farm was infected
  • Animals were not intended for commercial food supply
  • “There is no concern about the safety of the nation’s pork supply as a result of this finding”
