US Aims to Phase Out Petroleum-Based Food Dyes From Food Supply

The FDA plans to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the US food supply, including asking food companies to remove Red No. 3 sooner than previously required.

  • FDA starting process to revoke approval for Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B “within the coming months”
  • Six additional dyes to be removed from food supply by end of 2026
    • Green No. 3, Red No. 40, Yellow No. 5, Yellow No. 6, Blue No. 1 and Blue No. 2
  • Red No. 3 removal to be requested ahead of 2027-2028 deadline previously required
