Unneeded Chemical Peels Brought $8 Million in False Claims: Jury

A Florida physician and his ex-wife were convicted of carrying out an $8 million scheme to defraud Medicare and other health-care programs by submitting false claims for chemical peels and dermabrasion, the Justice Department said.

Erik M. Schabert was convicted after a three-week trial on one conspiracy count and 24 counts of health-care fraud, prosecutors said Oct. 31. Mika K. Harris, his former wife, was convicted on one conspiracy count, 49 counts of health-care fraud, and 40 counts of money laundering. Sentencing is set for Jan. 27 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida.
