UnitedHealth Reports $1.6 Million in Security Costs After Murder

UnitedHealth Group Inc., whose executive Brian Thompson was murdered in December, spent more than $1.6 million on security for its top employees last year.

It was the first time the insurer included security spending in its disclosure of C-suite staff’s compensation in filings going back nearly two decades. It’s unclear when in the year the personal protection was implemented.

The company said in a filing it paid an average of more than $330,000 for each of its five named executive officers. Heather Cianfrocco, the CEO of its Optum division, received more than $920,000 in security-related expenses.
