Unions Push for Stronger Defense in Mine Safety Silica Challenge

Two mine worker unions are seeking to intervene in an ongoing challenge to a federal rule that would require mines to cut the amount of breathable silica miners are exposed to in half.

The United Mine Workers of America, along with United Steelworkers, filed a motion in the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit to defend the silica rule. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration’s decision to pause enforcement and its unclear stance in defending the rule prompted the unions to file the motion, they said.
