Two of Ohio’s remaining six abortion clinics will likely close under new provider restrictions in a bill Gov. Mike DeWine signed Wednesday.
Ohio law requires surgical abortion clinics to have transfer agreements with doctors that have admitting privileges in local hospitals. But the bill (S.B. 157) prohibits these agreements for doctors that provide education at, or receive compensation from “public institutions,” making it practically impossible for the Dayton and Cincinnati clinics to enter them.
DeWine (R) issued a release saying he signed the bill without providing a comment. He didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
