Trump Agencies Aim to Restrict LGBT Rights as Courts Extend Them

The Supreme Court’s recent expansion of job rights for LGBT people is spurring legal challenges to the Trump administration’s efforts to roll back similar protections in health care, education, and employment.

Statutory Ties: The high court ruled that sexual orientation and gender identity fall under sex discrimination prohibitions of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which courts look to when interpreting the Affordable Care Act. Advocacy groups responded by challenging an administration rule on the ACA that would let health-care providers and insurers that receive federal funding refuse to treat or cover services for LGBT people.
