Trans Veterans Demand to Know Agency Stance on Surgery Coverage

Transgender veterans shouldn’t wait any longer for the US Veterans Affairs Department to act on a nearly 10-year old request to add gender-affirming surgery to the federal agency’s benefits package, a veterans group says.

The VA must be ordered to issue an official response to a rulemaking petition filed by transgender veterans in 2016 to lift an exclusion on surgical gender dysphoria care, the Transgender American Veterans Association told the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit on Tuesday. A rulemaking petition is a request for a government agency to introduce or revise its regulations.
