Surescripts, CVS Announce Electronic Prior Authorization Expansion Partnership

Sept. 17, 2014, 11:13 PM UTC

Surescripts, the most widely used electronic prescribing network, will expand its electronic prior authorization services to include CVS/Caremark and Express Scripts, which together are used by more than 200 million people nationwide, Surescripts announced Sept. 16.

Surescripts will provide electronic prior authorization services—which automatically connect pharmacists, physicians and insurers—with four new pharmacy benefit managers starting this year, including CVS/Caremark and Express Scripts as well as six health information technology vendors, Aprima Medical Software, DAW SYSTEMS, digiChart, First Databank Inc., OA Systems and Stratus Electronic Medical Record.

“There is so much opportunity for clinicians to leverage data to improve health care, but more often than not, critical information exists on paper and in silos.”
—Tom Skelton, Surescripts
