States Pursue Small Expansions to Medicaid Fertility Coverage

Nov. 20, 2023, 7:53 PM UTC

Montana is the latest in a cadre of states moving to introduce small-scale expansions of reproductive coverage for Medicaid beneficiaries at risk of infertility.

The state is awaiting federal approval of its plan to expand its Medicaid program to cover sperm and egg cell banking. Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte (R) earlier this year signed S.B. 516 into law, requiring that all insurers in the state, including Medicaid, cover fertility preservation services for people undergoing treatment for cancer.

Montana joins 3 other states—Utah, Illinois, and New York—that have also recently sought to cover fertility preservation services for their Medicaid populations.
