South Dakota Latest GOP State Set to Vote on Medicaid Expansion

South Dakota could become the seventh state to expand its Medicaid program via the ballot box.

Supporters of Medicaid expansion in South Dakota have spent more than $1 million on ads and organized voter registration drives hoping to use the November election to become the latest Republican-controlled state forced by the electorate to expand its public health insurance program under Affordable Care Act rules.

If the ballot question (proposed Constitutional Amendment D) is successful, more than 40,000 people could become eligible to join the state’s Medicaid program after July 1, 2023.
