Senate Overwhelmingly Passes Opioid Addiction Treatment Bill

Legislation to fight the prescription opioid and heroin addiction epidemic overwhelmingly passed the Senate March 10, but Democrats continued to criticize the bill’s lack of mandatory funding.

Separately, the Department of Health and Human Services said it will announce ”significant federal investment” to fight the opioid epidemic. The announcement is expected during a March 11 event in Baltimore.

The Senate passed the small, but politically important Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) of 2016 (S. 524) by a vote of 94-1. Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) voted against it, saying the federal government shouldn’t be responsible for fighting addiction. The vote ...
