San Francisco Punts on Smoking Ban Over Unintended Consequences

Elderly and fixed-income apartment dwellers who smoke got a reprieve on Tuesday when San Francisco County Supervisors delayed action on a proposal to ban smoking inside multi-unit buildings.

Supervisors voted 6 to 5 to return to committee a proposed ordinance that would have made San Francisco the largest U.S. city to ban smoking inside condos and apartments. The concern to be hashed out is whether the proposal, which would permit smoking marijuana, would have unintended consequences for people who smoke.
