Rural Hospital Closures Prompt Bipartisan Bid to Shore Up System

Sen. Marsha Blackburn introduced three bipartisan health bills that showcase possible Senate agreement around bolstering access to health care in rural America.

The bills would offer new grants for health centers and clinics to hire staff and stay open longer, create a loan repayment program for health-care providers focused on areas with severe shortages, and increase Medicare payments to rural hospitals.

Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican and one of the chairs of the Rural Health Caucus, said the legislation represents key issues she and her colleagues will advocate for this year.
