Rising Hospital Prices, High-Cost Claims Put Employers on Edge

The biggest threats to the affordability of employer-provided health coverage are drug prices, high-cost claims, and hospital prices, according to a survey of employers released Wednesday.

About 90% of the 152 employers surveyed by the National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions are using or are considering using hospital price and quality data, the survey said. Employers are trying to use the data to negotiate lower hospital prices. The coalition represents groups whose members employ more than 45 million Americans, and the surveyed employers represent about 1 million employees.
