Rejection of Arkansas Abortion Ballot Petition Prompts Lawsuit

The organization behind an abortion rights ballot measure in Arkansas wants the state’s top court to order the review of signatures in support of the proposal, arguing in a lawsuit filed Tuesday that the petition was unlawfully rejected.

Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston (R) informed Arkansans for Limited Government in a July 10 letter that its petition with more than 100,000 signatures was insufficient to qualify for the November ballot, arguing the political committee didn’t properly submit required statements on paid signature gatherers. The Arkansas group said it did provide all the information the secretary’s office had required.
