Planned Parenthood Sues South Carolina Over New Abortion Ban

A new South Carolina law that bans abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy violates the state constitution’s privacy, equal protection, and due process guarantees, Planned Parenthood says in a lawsuit filed Thursday.

The law, which went into effect immediately after Gov. Henry McMaster (R) signed the bill, prohibits abortions once fetal or embryonic cardiac activity has been detected. It imposes criminal penalties, licensing sanctions, and potential civil liability on doctors and other licensed health-care professionals.
