The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee are raising questions about how the organization that manages organ transplantation in the U.S. monitors the federal contractors who evaluate and procure organs.
The committee’s chairman, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), ranking Democrat Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) along with Sens. Todd Young (R-Ind.) and Ben Cardin (D-Md.) want to know how the United Network for Organ Sharing monitors and handles the approximately 60 federal contractors, known as organ procurement organizations (OPOs), that are responsible for connecting organ donors and recipients in specific geographic regions.
