ONC’s NwHIN Power Team Developing Criteria for Evaluating National Standards

An advisory group to the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology is in the early stages of developing criteria for assessing technology standards that eventually could become national standards for health IT.

While many of the draft assessment criteria presented to the HIT Standards Committee by the nationwide health information network (NwHIN) “power team” July 19 rely on evaluating existing and widely used technical standards and specifications, the head of the advisory group told the committee that nothing in the criteria was meant to set absolute requirements that standards must meet for adoption as national standards.
