A Cincinnati-based hospital will pay $4.1 million to resolve allegations of billing federal health-care programs for costs associated with medically unnecessary spine surgeries, the Department of Justice announced Oct. 9 (United States ex rel. Scott v. Durrani, S.D. Ohio, 1:13-cv-00194-TSB, settlement announced 10/9/15).
The settlement involves Cincinnati-based West Chester Hospital and its parent company, UC Health. The DOJ said the settlement resolves allegations that West Chester Hospital knowingly submitted claims to Medicare and Medicaid for hospital charges related to medically unnecessary spine surgeries performed between 2009 and 2013 by Dr. Abubakar Atiq Durrani.
