NY, Hit Hard by Virus Outbreak, May Delay Redesign of Medicaid

New York state now has a road map to find $2.5 billion in Medicaid savings to help fill a growing budget gap, but its efforts could be sidetracked due to the coronavirus.

The state’s Medicaid redesign team (MRT), which was tasked by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) to identify efficiencies in the safety net health-care program for fiscal year 2021, released its final recommendations Thursday.

The 17-page summary of recommendations looks to redirect funds toward the most essential areas and consolidate and trim nonessential programs.
