Nursing Home Discharges Draw Scrutiny From Federal Watchdog

The Biden administration should require nursing homes to “systematically document” facility-initiated discharges of residents in order to improve oversight of the process, a federal watchdog agency said Wednesday.

A study by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Inspector General “raises concerns about nursing homes’ understanding of and compliance with notice and documentation requirements” for these kinds of discharges. Facility-initiated discharges can occur if resident needs can’t be met, if residents improve, if they fail to pay, or if they create a health or safety threat.
