No More Free Insurance Premiums for North Carolina Retirees

North Carolina doesn’t have to provide premium-free health insurance to state and local government retirees, an appeals court ruled March 5.

The State Health Plan benefits can be altered for retirees as they “are promised nothing more than equal access to health care benefits on an equal basis with active state employees,” the North Carolina Court of Appeals said.

Some 222,000 teachers and other state retirees are potentially affected and will have to continue paying premiums, attorneys representing the retirees said in an online post. The attorneys weren’t immediately available for comment.
