Two common weed-killers are responsible for 85 percent of herbicide-related deaths in the U.S., the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health said in a recent study.
Aside from fatalities, paraquat caused 300 acute illnesses among farmworkers from 1998-2011, while diquat led to 144 acute illnesses over the same time period, NIOSH said in a Feb. 3 news release. NIOSH said researchers found several herbicide-related deaths in combing through the data, but the agency didn’t identify a specific number.
